The Official Story (La historia oficial)
The international success directed by Luis Puenzo (originally released in 1985), centering on a powerhouse performance by Norma Aleandro, is set in the final days of Argentina's "Dirty War," the 1970s-'80s period of brutal military dictatorship in which 30,000 citizens were "disappeared." The film focuses on one small story amid this national nightmare - a high school teacher's search to learn the identity of the mother of her adopted daughter. Aleandro won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, and the film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film, among many other awards around the world.
