5 Napkin Burger — Hell's Kitchen

Hell's Kitchen

In 2003, Andy D'Amico and Simon Oren opened Nice Matin on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Since opening night, no dish has been more popular than the "5 Napkin Burger." The dish proved so popular, in fact, the duo decided to give the burger its own stage in Hell's Kitchen. Since then an additional three 5 Napkin Burgers have opened in Manhattan. The 5 Napkin Burger is 10 ounces of fresh ground chuck topped with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and a rosemary aioli. In addition to the house burger, the menu features six other burgers: cheddar bacon, Italian turkey, lamb kofta burger, veggie burger, inside out burger and a burger salad. At its core, 5 Napkin Burger is a great neighborhood restaurant. They have rounded out the burger section of the menu with a broad array of dishes that appeal to anyone in any group. Our menu offers hand-crafted sushi, appetizer and entree salads and a full selection of entrees. For beverages, guests can choose from 50 beers, 100 wines and 10 specialty cocktails.

Bobo

West Village

Tucked inconspicuously into an old brownstone near the corner of 10th Street & 7th avenue, Bobo quietly announces its place on the culinary map of the West Village. While French-inspired fare is de rigueur in the village, Bobo stands out because of it elegance, and quirkiness. The unmarked entrance leads you just below-ground level to the bar (you can peek in the windows and check out the crowd), which bustles with activity. Here, a bar menu provides small plates that pair well with the wines selected for the cellar. Warmly lit and decorated with carefully chosen antiques, the space is designed to inspire that "speak-easy" feeling from the days of Dorothy Parker and the literati. A candlelit staircase takes you to the upstairs dining room, which exudes a cozy elegance seldom achieved no matter how often tried. This is a romantic place, so consider bringing your beloved here for a special occasion. The menu has undergone some alterations, and the kitchen a few chefs, since Bobo opened in 2007. But owner Carlos Suarez, who is as elegant as his restaurant, has managed to bring his vision to this corner of the west village. The technique is definitely inspired by classic French fare, but with a lighter hand and some newer, quirkier flavors. Don't look for loud-takers and glitz-seekers here. There's nothing crass about Bobo.

Magnolia Bakery — Upper West Side

Upper West Side

Year after year we are astounded to see so many tourists (and some natives) standing in line—often a long line—waiting for cupcakes. You can even see the cupcake froster in the window, a job which seems to have a lot of turnover. (How many cupcakes can you frost before you yell, "I quit!") We realize those ladies from Sex and the City made this place famous, but the cupcakes are not spectacular enough to make standing outside for 20 minutes worth your time. In this big city of endless bakeries, a word to the wise: Billy's Bakery on Ninth Avenue (21st Street) and the bakeries at nearby Chelsea Market haven't got any lines. And now that Allysa Torey has sold Magnolia to a well-known restaurateur, you too might as well move along. But if you are going to eat these cupcakes, we remind you to throw away your litter in a trash can; too many tourists have been accused by Greenwich Village curmudgeons of "trashing" their neighborhood with Magnolia detritus. You've been warned.

Market Table

West Village

High-concept simplicity, country-style decor, and high-concept... prices make this joint venture by the people who brought us Little Owl, Joey Campanaro, Gabriel Stulman, and the food of the Mermaid Inn much like the designer torn jeans of the 90's.

5ive Steak at JFK Terminal 5

South Ozone Park

With a hip bar scene and sidewalk seating, 5ive Steak brings a relaxed and innovative approach to the classic American steakhouse. Enjoy a simple filet or Black Angus New York strip, or perhaps a 24-ounce bone-in ribeye or dry-aged porterhouse. There's a terrific braised short rib, and sesame-crusted big eye tuna and pan-seared salmon to boot. Plenty of sides and salads and kids' dishes round out the many offerings here. We also find the great selection of burgers quite intriguing. Service is fast and the tranquil dining space gets you relaxed in the mood for jetting. If it's a toss-up between Piquillo and 5ive Steak, why not order the Barcelona Burger for a taste of Spain, with its creative toppings of Manchego cheese, piquillo peppers, avocado and smoked paprika mayo.

The Palm - Tribeca

Tribeca

The legendary Palm Restaurant has opened the doors of its newest location in Tribeca, just steps away from the Financial District, Hudson River and Battery Park. Enjoy the Palm's legenday prime-aged steaks, jumbo Nova Scotia lobsters and classic Italian specialties. The chef, Luis Nieto, also offers specials daily to please one and all. From coast to coast, people know that The Palm is synonymous with prime steaks and outrageously outsized lobsters. What many don`t realize is that The Palm is thoroughly family-bred. It has been run by the sons and now by the grandsons of both founding partners. In fact, The Palm Restaurant is the oldest family-owned white tablecloth restaurant to expand across the United States and still maintain family ownership. Pio Bozzi and John Ganzi`s original New York City steakhouse on Second Avenue has grown into a thriving empire of over 25 restaurants spanning the continent from Boston to Los Angeles. The northern Italian entrepreneurs who began The Palm tradition in 1926 intended it to be a restaurant specializing in cuisine from their native Parma, Italy. According to Palm folklore, the name "Palm" originated when the proprietors obtained a business license. They wanted to call it "Parma," but because of their Italian accents, it translated into "Palm." Steaks and seafood were not part of the original concept of The Palm but began out of an effort to cater to its clientele of artists and writers. Every time a customer asked for a steak, John Ganzi ran up Second Avenue to a nearby butcher shop, bought a steak, and cooked to order. Today, The Palm runs its own meat wholesale company to ensure the quality of its steaks. The Palm`s reputation for seafood started with third generation owners Wally Ganzi and Bruce Bozzi who introduced the gargantuan four-to-eight pound lobsters in the 1970s and disproved the theory that large lobsters are tough. Almost overnight The Palm went from selling 150 pounds of lobster per week to 25,000 pounds per week. Even with these signature additions, tradition at The Palm honors its roots. Some of John Ganzi's original Italian dishes are still on the menu!
