The Authentic Source for
This small and highly reputable chain of Canadian booksellers opened their only outpost in the United States to much fanfare in SoHo/NoLIta. Although the smallest of McNally's stores, with 7000 square feet it is quite spacious for an independent bookseller in New York City. With a charming café and fantastic staff, it is a pleasure to browse and buy here as well as to attend the many book signing, readings, and other events.

The city that never sleeps was bound to get an Apple store that never sleeps. The massive underground store open 24/7/365 is marked by a sleek glass cube at the plaza in front of the drab GM building on Fifth Avenue, a dramatic setting that symbolizes the old tech vs. new tech dichotomy. Indeed, the soaring glass cube, each face more than 30 feet, marks new territory for Apple, which before the introduction of its beloved iPod almost went to the brink. Seems intuitive that the Big Apple gets the biggest Apple Store, right? Not only is this the largest Apple Store (with more than 300 employees), its Genius Bar will have almost 100 full-time staff. In fact, with this 45-foot-long combo Genius Bar, iPod Bar and The Studio, we predict New Yorkers of all stripes will abandon Kinko's and instead hang around here to swap ideas as well as work feverishly on projects in the middle of the night.

Renowned art dealer Paula Cooper opened a trendy Chelsea bookstore in 2003 to rave reviews. The superb selection of literature and history, art and criticism, the social and natural sciences, travel and children's books as well as interesting events and readings draws customers back again and again. Along with Printed Matter across the street, this corridor of Tenth Avenue has a highbrow quotient in addition to endless new restaurants.

The beloved and infamous Strand underwent a radical transformation, quantum-leaping into the 21st century with a beautiful new second floor chock full of art and photography books. Now with new lighting thoughout the store and impressive air conditioning on the main level, searching here seems less like trolling through your grandmother's attic. While New Yorkers previously loved this zany outpost with its "18 miles of books," the truth is that in its previous incarnation the Strand was filthy, dusty and sometimes smelly. Now the renovations as well as its Internet book sales have brought Strand on par with its toughest competitors, and Strand is clearly holding its own. The quirkiness remains—especially in the lower level—where we recently heard the Replacements "I Will Dare" while admired several thick piece of label tape on bookshelves such as "Eastern thought ends here" and "Returning books to their proper place is a sign of healthy social integration". Well worth many repeat visits.
Essentially the butchest and manliest outfitters in town, you'll find no shortage of leather and fetish gear here.
