Believe it or not but there are quite a number of options for swimmers in New York City, depending on your location, schedule, and the time of year you're staying here. If you're here during the summer months all of the city park's outdoor pools, such as the impressive, Olympic-sized one at Hamilton Fish Park on East Houston, are open in late June and officially close on Labor Day. They are generally open during this time period quite early every day, and usually have special hours reserved for lap swimming and for open swimming suitable for families. The best part about these public park pools is that use of each facility is FREE. During the colder winter months there are two main options for avid swimmers in New York City. If you are here for an extended period of time and absolutely want to swim on a regular basis, you can join one of New York City's Indoor Recreation facilities for a modest fee and swim there every day if you'd like. (That standard membership actually grants you access to the gym, pool, and other facilities for an entire year.)
